Protect Your Patch

Protect 30% of NSW’s Land and Sea by 2030

To the NSW Premier,

We, the undersigned, call on your Government to confront the extinction and climate crises facing NSW by protecting at least 30% of our States’s land and sea by 2030, consistent with Australia’s commitments under the Convention for Biological Diversity.

NSW’s reefs, forests, rivers, wetlands and coastal ecosystems support unique wildlife, sustain regional communities, and enrich the lives of millions who visit our natural areas each year. These landscapes provide essential ecosystem services, such as clean air, healthy water, carbon storage and climate resilience, but are increasingly threatened by habitat loss, unsustainable development and climate change.

The NSW Government is preparing a Nature Strategy to safeguard the biodiversity and values of our land and seas. To ensure it delivers real protection for nature and future generations, that strategy must:

  • Apply a 30% protection and restoration target across all NSW bioregions, covering terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems by 2030.
  • Support objective, science‑based proposals for new Protected Areas, incorporating locally led solutions.
  • Apply strong, consistent standards to marine protection, including fully no‑take sanctuaries across at least 30% of each marine bioregion to rebuild fish stocks, protect habitats and strengthen resilience to warming seas.
  • End native forest logging on public land and create the next generation of national parks to secure biodiversity and nature‑based tourism.
  • Curb excessive land clearing by incentivising conservation agreements with farmers and private landholders.
  • Establish a comprehensive Protected Area network for freshwater ecosystems, safeguarding rivers, wetlands and catchments.
  • Work in genuine partnership with First Nations communities to embed cultural governance, knowledge and leadership in land and sea management.
  • Apply Comprehensive, Adequate and Representative principles to ensure protected areas are ecologically meaningful, connected and resilient.
  • Prioritise protection in under‑represented bioregions.
  • Provide clear targets, timelines, funding and accountability.
  • Promote the social, economic and health benefits of natural areas.

Now is the time for decisive action to restore a healthy, resilient NSW, protecting nature, securing clean water, food security, climate stability and thriving regional communities.

We call on the NSW Government to act now and protect 30% of NSW land and sea by 2030.
